Benchmarks : AMD Neo vs. Intel Atom

vs. +  Intel GMA 950

I know! The comparison isn't even fair -- AMD Athlon Neo or just AMD Neo is an ultraportable platform while Intel Atom is merely meant to power Netbooks. (We have discussed the difference between an Ultraportable and a Netbook in a past entry. Read it again here.)

A tad unfair but what can we do!? A lot of people have been asking us -- How does AMD Athlon Neo compare against Intel Atom Diamondville (N270)?

Well, Engadget has published AMD Athlon Neo 's benchmarks vis-a-vis those of Intel Atom. And as expected, AMD Neo kicks Intel Atom 's flat a**!

AMD Neo vs. Intel Atom vs. Intel Core2Duo Benchmarks , source: Engadget

Based on the graphs, we can see that Intel Atom Diamondville paired with Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics is, at least, two times slower than AMD Neo paired with ATI Radeon 3410 Discrete Graphics in converting music to Ipod and 48% slower in creating movie from photos.

And while we are on these graphs:

AMD Athlon Neo 1.6Ghz vs. Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz

This time Intel kicks AMD 's a**! Core2Duo, with the same clockspeed, converts music to iPod at least 30% faster than AMD Neo and 50% faster in making movie from photos -- yes, even with just integrated graphics.

  1. Most of the article was fair enough but you then go on to comment:

"This time Intel kicks AMD 's a**! Core2Duo, with the same clockspeed, converts music to iPod at least 30% faster than AMD Neo and 50% faster in making movie from photos -- yes, even with just integrated graphics."

At double the price (260% say you're figures) I would expect more than the 30% better performance for encoding from the (overpriced?) Core2Duo.

I make these prices up just to illustrate a point:
If somebody offered me a Neo for £50 and said or perhaps you would prefer the Core2Duo for £100 as it does 30% better for ripping

  2. Not to mention the core2duo would suck more power than both the Atom and Neo put together, it isn't designed to be in the same league as the Atom or Neo.

Compare apples to apples, the Atom to Neo is a fair match as they are both designed to be low power consumption and ultra-mobile in small form factors.

The core2duo is meant for bigger, beefier machine that would most likely performing much more intensive tasks.

Do research dickhead before you make comparisons about things you know nothing about.

  3. Also the integrated graphics have no effect on converting photos to video. That is a CPU/Memory intensive task only...the video card generally has no part of that...

  4. Actually It is fair if it is compared on how much they're selling it... Right now AMD Neo x2 maintains a competitive price point against Intel's N450... If i have P24,000 right now, I'd buy the MSI wind u230 rather than buy an Intel cause Atom's slower performance per clock...

  5. Thank you for this post. Now I know some differences between these two products. It is easy now to decide which is which to buy.
