If it's your first time to encounter the word, APad (alt. iPed, HiPad) is actually a name given to all affordable Android slates made in China. APads flaunt a design identity similar to that of Apple iPad and run on various versions of Samsung Galaxy Tab's operating system.

Probably the most popular APad device right now is the one made by Moonse (shown above). It's quite hot hot in China right now perhaps because two things; One, because it runs on Android 2.1 Eclair as apposed to the Android 1.6 Donut OS of earlier APads. And two, because it has a capacitive touchscreen, which responds to the slightest touch, instead of a resistive one.

Here's a demo video of Moonse's APad Android Tablet courtesy of Shanzai --

Moonse E7002 is now available via various online stores for only around $210, which is a very competitive price given its specifications.

In the Philippines, there are already some versions of APad that are available in the market. There's iRobot Apad which only costs around Php 4,000 in 168, in Greenhills and at various online stores. iRobot runs Android 1.6 OS with its ARM processor and 128 MB of RAM. Other specs include 7-inch resistive touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution, 4GB of internal flash memory, SD card slot that supports up to 32GB, and 2 USB 2.0 ports. As for connectivity, it supports Wifi 802.11 b/g/n.

Actually, I've yet to try out an APad. But just from watching the demo video, I'm inclined to believe that it's a device worth checking out -- especially when you consider its unbelievably low price tag.

TP Asks the Crowd: Do you own an APad? What can you say about the device?
