Earth Hour Philippines 2011 : March 26, 8:30 PM

TechPinas: The Philippine Technology Blog supports Earth Hour 2011 and all efforts to protect and nurture our planet.

What's Earth Hour?

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.

This year, Earth Hour will start tonight (that's March 26, 2011) at 8:30 PM in the Philippines.

TP Friends, let's participate in this very meaningful event. At 8:30 tonight, let's turn off the lights in our room and invite our friends and folks to do the same. I invite you to go beyond the hour and when the lights go back on, think about what else you can do to make a difference.

Here's to our planet and Mother Nature!

  2. Earth Hour is a good starting move in the right direction to help against climate change.

But one thing more of great concern to me in the same battle is the deadly poisonous air that we breathe in some Cities here (Cebu in my example). Lets start by getting rid of these dirty obnoxious smelly polluting "OLD" tricycles, multicabs, Jeepneys and Trucks, by this I do not mean all of them but just the ones that pollute the air that we and our children breathe.

There is no way on earth that these vehicles would get through a legal smoke emissions test but of course the owners can pay a couple of hundred pesos extra to help the emissions tester to pass the vehicle. Likewise a lot of the older vehicles are suffering from mechanical faults like steering, brakes etc causing a number of accidents and fatalities to occur.

Pollution causes Cancer and Respiratory diseases as well as being a major contributing factor towards climate change so can our corrupt government, politicians, police and mayors make a consolidated move and help get rid of the dirty, filthy, stinking pollution.

Oh one more thing, do away with the barbecues that litter the streets and pollute the air also. The small barbecues are definitely a health hazard especially with the unhygienic handling and cooking of the "food".... Yuks!!
