Huawei Ascend W1 Unboxing, Initial Impressions : Five Things I Like About It, Quick Demo Video, In the Flesh Photos

Donning a price tag of only Php 8,990, Huawei Ascend W1 is currently one of the most affordable Windows Phone 8 devices that you can get in the Philippines.

Its pocket-friendly SRP truly makes it an ideal smartphone for budget conscious consumers - including students and yuppies - who are curious about WP and are considering jumping to the platform from Android or iOS.

The handset comes with a rather small and simple paper packaging, which is good for the environment. On the right panel, you'll find a list of Huawei Ascend W1's key technical specifications headlined by its 1.2 GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor, 4-inch WVGA IPS display, 5 MegaPixel main camera with LED flash, 720p video recorder, and the large 1,950 mAh battery.

TP Friends, check out my quick unboxing and user interface demo video of Huawei Ascend W1. In the clip, I also mentioned some of the WP apps that I enjoy using and showed a bit of People Hub, a social networking feature that's unique to Windows Phone handsets.

So again, inside the box, you'll find the unit itself, the charger, earphones, microUSB to USB connector cable, user manual, and other documentation. (Click photos for full resolution view.)

I have yet to fully test all the features of the handset for a full review but off hand, I just want to share with you the five things that I love about Huawei Ascend W1 WP8 smartphone.

1. Premium Design and Build : While it doesn't have a polycarbonate unibody shell similar to that of Nokia Lumia handsets, Huawei Ascend W1 has its own charm and still looks arresting. Its design - replete with metallic accents - is almost the same as that of the gorgeous Huawei Ascend P1 Android smartphone, which only means that it's no push over when it comes to the looks department.

2. No Lags and Long Battery Life! : One of the nicest things about the Windows Phone operating system is that it offers a 'no lag' user experience. And when it runs on a handset powered by a Dual Core Snapdragon S4 chip like Huawei Ascend W1, you're sure to get smooth touch response and snappy performance. That's cool and all but perhaps the most notable thing about this release is that its sizable 1,950 mAh battery delivers a staggering 460 hours of standby and 8 hours of talk time -- the most for any phone in this price category.

3. Decent Camera : The handset comes with a 5 MegaPixel camera that delivers good photos in well-lit conditions. And in settings with poor lighting, the LED flash comes in handy, helping it take decent shots. So if you're fond of taking photos but you're not keen on always carrying a digicam, you can rely on Huawei Ascend W1 to be your trusty partner.

4. Growing Number of Apps : As of writing, there are more than 135,000 downloadable apps for Windows Phone and that number is steadily growing by the day. I know that's not as many as the apps available for iOS or Android currently but note that the marketplace growth of WP is faster than those two platforms. Some of my favorite and most used WP apps include Facebook Beta, Twitter, Tube Pro, Appy Geek, and Viber.

5. It makes me feel unique! : Frankly, these days, everyone just seems to want to join the Android or iOS bandwagon. You look around you and you see a lot people holding either an iPhone or an Android handset. That's just how it is. It just feels great to own a smartphone running an OS and flaunting an interface that's not like what's on most other people's devices.

Alright! That's it for now. Let me know if you have questions about Huawei Ascend W1. To those who already own this hip handset, kindly post your thoughts about it via our comments section.
