Huawei Mate 8 Price in the Philippines is Php 32,990, Release Date is on March 5, 2016

Huawei's handsome 2016 flagship phablet has just been officially announced in the Philippines. The media launch was held last March 2, 2016 at the Grand Ballroom of Solaire Hotel in ParaƱaque City.

When it hits store shelves across the country starting on March 5, 2016, Huawei Mate8 will sell for Php 32,990, putting it in direct competition with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 among a few others in the high-end price echelon.

Given the calibre of its rivals, I guess it's but fair for us to ask if Mate 8 has what it takes to grab the lead and attract Pinoy consumers into choosing it.

Let's take a look at what the phablet has to offer.

In terms of design, as you can see, it's right up there with the best of them. Flaunting a full metal unibody shell - crafted from CNC-prepared anodized aluminum - and measuring only 7.9 millimeters, Huawei Mate 8 is a definite head-turner. It also features a highly structured look, giving the smartphone a svelte industrial appeal that I find very attractive.

The slightly protruding circular camera module at the back with concentric brushed finish - I think - is the identifying design accent of this model.

In terms of technical specifications, it's - again - quite a handful. Mate8 sports a massive 6-inch Full HD IPS-NEO display panel protected by the curved 2.5D diamond-cut scratch-resistant glass, a top-notch 8 MegaPixel selfie camera with wide-angle lens, a 16 MegaPixel camera at the back with Dual Tone LED flash, stacked Sony sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and Smart Optical Image Stabilization making it one of the best imaging-centric phablets out there, and a huge - albeit non-removable - 4,000 mAh battery pack that's sure to deliver above-average uptime with regular use.

You can argue that Mate8's screen should have had Quad HD resolution like that of its 2016 top-of-the-line competitors -- but you know what, this phablet's display is so clear and brilliant, I'm sure you'll find the quality more than acceptable. Also, for consumers like me who love having a sizable screen on their smartphones for browsing websites, flipping through photos, and watching movies, Mate8's huge 6-inch panel is already a treat despite not being all that pixel-dense.

Now, let's do a rundown of its internal hardware. Huawei Mate 8 runs its Emotion UI 4.0 flavored Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS with the company's powerhouse 64-Bit HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset incorporating four ARM Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz, four ARM Cortex A53 CPUs clocked at 1.8 GHz, and a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU, 4GB of RAM for the best multitasking experience you can get on a Huawei smartphone, and a whopping 64GB of internal storage that's even expandable via the hybrid secondary nanoSIM that also works as a microSD card expansion slot. I'd say, Mate8's set of innards makes it one of the Android handsets to beat this year in terms of raw power as Kirin 950 is currently rivaled only by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 in terms of single core and multi core performance.

Huawei Mate 8 also comes with extra hardware and software features that aim to enhance the overall user experience. To be specific, there's a fingerprint sensor at the back for quickly unlocking the phone, fast charging support, optional Dual SIM capability, 4G LTE Cat6 support, a separate image sensor processor for the camera, contact card scanner, quick split screen with just a swipe of a knuckle on the screen, and mobile connectivity support with Android Auto.

Off hand, I think Huawei Mate 8 is a strong competitor in the flagship level this 2016 and it's certainly one that's worthy of being considered by high-end consumers who want to get the most value for every peso they spend on gadgets.

Right now, I'm greatly looking forward to taking Huawei Mate 8 out for a spin. With the little time that I spent playing the device when I was outside the country last month, the features that instantly attracted to me to it are the big and brilliant screen, the super clear selfie cam, the reliable main camera, the big battery, and the downright gorgeous construction.
