TP Friends, I've been very lucky to have witnessed the launch of Nokia Lumia 1520 here in Nokia World 2013 currently being held in Abu Dhabi.
Nokia Lumia 1520 basically combines all the benefits of a full-fledged phablet, the Finnish company's industry-leading PureView imaging technology, and the Nokia Lumia Black software upgrade incorporating Microsoft's GDR3 improvements for the Windows Phone platform.
The device sports a massive 6-inch Full HD IPS display - making it technically the first phablet by Nokia. This panel sits underneath Corning Gorilla Glass 2 touchscreen, which does not only make the phone feel very durable but is also scratch-resistant. Having such large screen allows the phone to have a three column home screen interface giving users more space to for their app tiles. Of course, the increased display size also lets you appreciate photos, movies, games, applications and websites more.
Nokia Lumia 1520 features a design language or identity that's undeniably Lumia. You get a unibody polycarbonate shell similar to that of Nokia Lumia 920 and 720 that feels very solid in the hand and looks very sleek and svelte. The device is available in red with glossy or glazed finish and yellow, black, and white all with matte texture.
Weighing only 209 grams and with thickness of just 8.7 millimeters, Nokia Lumia 1520 may have a ginormous footprint but it remains to be very thin and light. It won't be inconspicuous when kept in the pocket but it will surely be a joy to have in the purse or bag.
Apart from the massive display, three more features set Nokia Lumia 1520 apart from all other Lumias released in the past. First, it comes with a 20 MegaPixel PureView autofocus camera with dual LED flash and optical image stabilization (OIS). This shooter isn't quite as powerful as the one on Nokia Lumia 1020 but I believe it is good enough to eclipse all other cameras on phones by competing brands currently out in the market.
PureView is an innovation involving several enhancements on the imaging capabilities of the phone both in terms of software and hardware but the most popular capability of PureView is Oversampling, a technique that basically combines several pixels into one pure pixel resulting in the clearest images possible. OIS, on the other hand, is made possible by a "floating lens" that stays stable, compensating for hand shaking or movement while taking photos and videos.
Second, Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first handset from Nokia to run on a quad core processor. The device is powered by a Quad Core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU based Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset - the same processor running Samsung Galaxy Note3, LG G2, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Sony Xperia Z1 - delivering a smooth and lag-free gaming, video viewing, and overall touch experience.
Finally, the phablet's operating system is Nokia Lumia Black WP8, which incorporates the latest features brought by Microsoft's GDR3 upgrade for Windows Phone - including orientation lock, lock screen notifications, ability to close apps, among many othes - and gives users the new default Nokia Camera App combining Pro Camera and Smart Cam (along with Video Capture, and Burst Mode) in one interface - Nokia Beamer (allowing you to quickly share or mirror your Lumia's display on that of another device via QR Code), Nokia Refocus - allowing the user to change the point of focus of a photo after it is taken - and the Nokia Storyteller app, which works like a Gallery replacement integrating photos with Nokia Here Maps location services. Here's a full demo of the Nokia Lumia 1520 that I recorded during the event, I hope you can watch it to be more familiar with all the features of the phablet that I mentioned in this post.
TP Friends, Nokia has made no mention of the phablet's exact release date in the Philippines or elsewhere in the world. Nonetheless, I'm expecting Nokia Lumia 1520 to hit store shelves in the country either this coming Christmas or by January 2014. As for the price tag, the official SRP in the US will be $749 and our guesstimate for the Philippines is around Php 32,990.
Update: Nokia Lumia 1520 saw official release in the Philippines last January 10, 2014. The official SRP of the flagship WP8 phablet in the Philippines is Php 34,990.
