Globe Telecom and Smart Communications Put Aside Rivalry and Join Forces To Help Victims of Typhoon Yolanda

In an inspiring act of cooperation and unity amidst tragedy and calamity, the two biggest cellular networks in the Philippines which are also known to be bitter business rivals, Globe Telecom and Smart Communications with its subsidiary Sun Cellular, today put aside whatever differences they have and joined forces to provide much needed assistance to the victims and survivors of Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan).

The aid comes in the form of free local and international text messages for subscribers in Eastern Visayas and Northern Cebu, areas heavily hit by the strongest tropical cyclone in recorded history with wind speeds of up to 315 km/h. The super typhoon brought massive, heartbreaking devastation in the country's Visayas region, which include the islands of Cebu, Samar, and Leyte, where the governor estimates that around 10,000 people died because of the natural calamity while almost everyone lost their homes.

The landmark and historic partnership between Globe Telecom and Smart Communications was first disclosed by the latter via a message on the popular social networking site, Twitter.

Globe Telecom Smart Communications

"This is a time for Filipinos to come together and help our countrymen in their hour of great need. This joint effort will help Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk 'N Text subscribers in the typhoon-struck areas to communicate with their loved ones at home and abroad," shared Mr. Charles A. Lim, Executive Vice President of Smart and Chief Operating Officer of Digital Mobile Philippines via Smart's official statement posted on Facebook.

On the other hand, Mr. Peter Bithos - Chief Operating Advisor for Globe Consumer Business Group - said, "This free service is open to all Globe and TM subscribers in these Visayas provinces. This is the company’s way of giving assistance to our customers who suffered from the typhoon’s onslaught and who need to reach out to their family and friends in the country and abroad."

In this joint partnership to help alleviate the condition of our fellow Filipinos in their time of great need, Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and Sun Cellular will be offering 25 free SMS per day for five days that may be used for local and international messages. This will be available to all their customers in the provinces of Leyte, Samar, Cebu, Aklan, Antique, and Capiz from November 13 to 17. This - I believe - will be very helpful as businesses are mostly still down in these areas and survivors are constantly trying to find ways to reach out and get in touch with their relatives in and outside of Visayas.

For Smart and Sun subscribers, the free service will be pushed automatically to their phones at the start of each day. Subscribers will receive SMS notifications once the bundles are sent; No registration is required. For Globe and TM subscribers, the free service can be availed by texting BangonPinoy to 8888.

As of writing, both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications are doing their very best to restore their respective services, rebuild towers, and assist emergency relief activities of the government and humanitarian agencies.

TP Friends, let's do whatever we can - big or small - to help our fellow Filipinos who are suffering because of Typhoon Yolanda and the strong earthquake that recently hit Bohol and Cebu. Like Globe and Smart, let's forget our differences and join hands to offer assistance to those who need us the most. Let's lift each other up - instead of spreading hate and promoting division - in this time of national calamity.
