Nokia N1 Price $249, Complete Specs, Release Date : Android 5.0 Lollipop Tablet Heralding The Finnish Giant's Return To The Mobile Market

I literally burst into tears when a close friend showed me photos of this upcoming device while we were having dinner earlier this evening.

You all had been a witness to my long and steamy affair with pre-Microsoft-deal Nokia -- and as a tech blogger, one of my biggest wishes is to see the Finnish Giant rise again from its seeming decline within the past three years. Hopefully, this slate can herald an amazing new beginning for my beloved brand.

Nokia N1

In an epic and landmark move shocking the entire tech community, today, the legendary electronics company from Finland announced the Nokia N1, the first ever Nokia-branded Android tablet. The N1 offers the innovative, predictive Nokia Z Launcher interface, and a carefully crafted industrial design by Nokia with a focus on simplicity. The N1 will be brought to market in Q1 2015 through a brand-licensing agreement with a partner original equipment manufacturer (OEM) responsible for manufacturing, distribution and sales of the product.

Nokia N1

"We are pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers' hands with the N1 Android tablet, and to help make sophisticated technologies simple. The N1 has a delightfully intuitive interface and an industrial design to match it. This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet," said Mr. Sebastian Nyström - Head of Products at Nokia Technologies - who announced the Nokia N1 at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki, signaling the much-anticipated return of the biggest phone manufacturer the world has ever seen.

According to the Finnish Giant, the gorgeous industrial design of the N1 tablet is deliberately developed to match the elegant simplicity of its Nokia Z user interface. It has a unique one-piece aluminum design with a soft finish in both Lava Grey and Natural Aluminum colors giving it a look of corporate sophistication and understated elegance. The 7.9-inch laminated display sits in a 6.9 millimeter thin and light shell that makes the device comfortable to hold even with just one hand. A 2.4 Ghz Quad Core 2.3 GHz Intel Atom Z3580 64-bit processor complemented by 2 GB of RAM provides stellar gaming and overall touch performance on this tablet running the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

Nokia N1

Today's mobile warriors manage and use a large set of applications on their devices. Nokia N1 makes that easy with the company's Z Launcher, allowing users to scribble a letter or two to find and launch content faster and more conveniently. Over time the Z Launcher learns what applications are in use, and predicts and highlights the ones consumers are expected to open based on time of day as well as their location.

Nokia N1
Nokia N1 is one of the first tablets in the world to run Android 5.0 Lollipop OS right out of the box.

Does this herald Nokia's return as device manufacturer? Well, not entirely. Or at least, not just yet. Nokia is licensing its branding, the industrial design, Nokia Z Launcher interface and IP on a running royalty basis to its 'secret' OEM partner -- that was later revealed to be Foxconn (at least, for this release), which also makes Apple products. This OEM partner is then responsible for full business execution of this product (as well as future ones), from engineering and sales to customer care, including liabilities and warranty costs, inbound IP and software licensing and contractual agreements with 3rd parties.

Nokia N1

The Nokia N1 is slated for release in China this coming Q1 2015 for an estimated price of only $249 USD (or just Php 11,250) before taxes, with the anticipation of expanding sales to other markets -- hopefully, including the Philippines - where, to this day, Nokia phones are still ubiquitous and well-loved.

Welcome back, Nokia!
