According to Apple Insider, the next gen iPad and iPhone - set for release within the first half of this year - will pack an improved version of the A4 chip called simply 'Apple A5'.

Apple A5 vs. Apple A4 : What are the main differences?

Apple A5 features 4 times the graphics processing power of A4. This means that with A5, Retina Display with 4x the resolution of its current screen is now a possibility for the iPad. Thanks to the new chip, 1080p HDMI video output can now be the "default" specification in this year's generation of iDevices, including Apple TV.

The A5 speed boost also applies to video processing. This enables Apple to upgrade the iPad and iPhone from VGA-style component video output to HDMI and helps make Facetime possible for iPad 2.

Quoting AppleInsider,

A source familiar with Apple's graphics strategy says the company will not only be upgrading its video core, but also going to multiple cores, a feature that is designed into the SGX543 design. The most likely configuration of Apple's next custom chip is reportedly the SGX543MP2, which pairs two SGX543 cores to work as one, offering around four times the capability of the previous A4 in graphics and video tasks.

iPad 2 is becoming more and more enticing by the day, do you think? I passed on the first generation iPad for more reasons than one, but if all these unconfirmed rumors and speculations turn out real, I just might get its follow-up this year.
