Rather than simple addition of technologies, Kakezan emphasizes combining strengths across industries to create solutions with greater societal impact. This includes Toyota’s manufacturing expertise, Woven by Toyota’s software capabilities, and contributions from partners known as Inventors.

AI Vision Engine Powers Real-Time Awareness

A major highlight of the announcement is the Woven City AI Vision Engine, a large-scale foundation model designed to interpret real-world conditions in real time. This system integrates visual, behavioral, and environmental data from sources such as cameras, mobility platforms, and user inputs.

By analyzing these streams of information, the AI Vision Engine can detect patterns, identify risks, and enable coordinated responses across connected systems. Its capabilities place it among the leading Vision Language Models globally, reinforcing Toyota’s serious investment in AI-driven urban intelligence.

The technology is already being tested within Woven City through a proof-of-concept collaboration with UCC Japan Co., Ltd. Looking ahead, Toyota and Woven by Toyota plan to extend its applications beyond the city, signaling broader ambitions for real-world deployment.

Integrated ANZEN System Enhances Safety

Complementing the AI Vision Engine is the Woven City Integrated ANZEN System, which brings together multiple AI technologies into a unified safety framework. This includes Woven City Behavior AI and Woven City Drive Sync Assist.

Behavior AI focuses on interpreting and predicting human actions, while Drive Sync Assist provides contextual driving support based on real-time conditions. By combining insights from vehicle cameras and traffic infrastructure, the system helps anticipate movement and communicate relevant information to both drivers and pedestrians.

The result is a synchronized environment where mobility systems, infrastructure, and individuals operate as a cohesive unit. This approach aims to improve safety and deliver a more seamless urban experience both on and off the road.

Data Platforms Enable Smarter Cities

Beyond AI models, Toyota also introduced Woven City Infra Hub and Woven City Data Fabric. These platforms serve as the backbone for managing and utilizing data across the city.

Infra Hub acts as an integrated data platform that connects various systems, while Data Fabric ensures that information can be used effectively while respecting privacy and individual preferences. Together, they provide the infrastructure needed to support large-scale, data-driven innovation in a smart city environment.

Inventor Garage Opens as Development Hub

Another key milestone is the launch of the Inventor Garage, a dedicated facility for developing new mobility products and services. Operational since April 2026, this space supports end-to-end innovation, from concept creation to validation.

The Garage includes co-creation spaces for building prototypes, testing areas for validation, and communal environments where Inventors can collaborate with residents known as Weavers. Toyota and Toyota Motor East Japan also contribute engineering expertise throughout the process.

Interestingly, the facility is housed in the former stamping plant of Toyota Motor East Japan’s Higashi Fuji site. This location reflects a blend of heritage and innovation, carrying forward the spirit of monozukuri, or the art of making things.

A Three-Stage Innovation Loop

The Inventor Garage plays a critical role in Woven City’s unique development cycle, which consists of three stages.

First is the Inventor Garage itself, where rapid prototyping takes place. Next is the Inventor Field, a controlled testing environment for validation. Finally, innovations move into the Phase 1 Residential Area, where they are tested in real-life conditions among approximately 100 residents.

This structured loop allows new technologies to evolve from concept to real-world application while maintaining safety and reliability at every stage.

New Inventors Join the Ecosystem

Toyota also announced the addition of four new Inventors to Woven City, bringing the total to 24. These include AI Robot Association, DAIICHIKOSHO CO., LTD., Joby Aviation, Inc., and Toyota Financial Services Corporation.

Each brings a distinct focus. AI Robot Association works on advancing AI-enabled robotics and their societal adoption. DAIICHIKOSHO explores flexible karaoke experiences through real-world testing. Joby Aviation contributes expertise in electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, supporting the development of an air mobility ecosystem. Meanwhile, Toyota Financial Services looks into new financing models based on real-world mobility data.

Their inclusion highlights the diverse and collaborative nature of Woven City’s growing innovation network.

Continuing Momentum for Woven City

The initiative continues to gain momentum with the Toyota Woven City Challenge accelerator program, which aims to bring startups into the ecosystem alongside established companies. This expanding community reinforces the city’s role as a hub for experimentation and collaboration.

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda also remains actively involved as the city’s “Master Weaver.” His contributions include the development of Akio Toyoda AI, a model inspired by his leadership and decision-making style, designed to encourage AI adoption within the Toyota Group.

Driving Toward a Connected Future

With the unveiling of these technologies and the expansion of its Inventor network, Toyota and Woven by Toyota are doubling down on their commitment to Kakezan. By combining AI, data platforms, and collaborative innovation, Woven City continues to evolve as a testing ground for solutions that could shape future societies.

The goal is clear: to create technologies that not only advance mobility but also deliver meaningful, lasting impact for people and communities worldwide.
