Visa Expands Contactless Tap to Ride Payments to LRT-2 in the Philippines

VISA Card Payment LRT-2
Commuters can now use Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices for faster, safer, and more convenient contactless fare payments across all 13 stations of LRT-2.

  • Cashless Expansion: Visa has expanded its open-loop, contactless fare payment system to LRT-2, allowing commuters to pay using Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices while making everyday train travel faster, safer, and more convenient.
  • Inclusive Mobility: The initiative strengthens financial inclusion by giving more Filipinos and international visitors easier access to digital payments while supporting seamless public transportation across Metro Manila.
  • Growing Network: Following successful deployments on MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod, the LRT-2 rollout marks Visa's fourth cashless transit project in the Philippines and further advances the country's smart mobility ecosystem.

Commuting on one of Metro Manila's busiest rail lines has just become more convenient. Visa, working alongside RCBC, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and other key stakeholders, has officially expanded its open-loop, contactless fare collection system to the Manila Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2). The latest rollout gives commuters another fast and secure way to pay for their daily train rides while reinforcing the country's continued shift toward digital payments.

The project represents Visa's fourth cashless transit initiative in the Philippines, further demonstrating how digital payment technologies are becoming an increasingly important part of everyday transportation. By making fare payments simpler for both residents and visitors, the initiative also supports broader efforts to improve financial inclusion and strengthen urban mobility.

Bringing Modern Payments to a Historic Rail Line

The Manila Light Rail Transit system has long been part of the country's transportation history. When its first line began operations in December 1984, it became Southeast Asia's first rapid transit system, setting the foundation for modern urban rail travel in the region.

As Metro Manila continued to expand, LRT-2 was introduced in April 2003 to accommodate increasing passenger demand. The line has since been extended eastward toward Rizal Province, allowing it to serve even more communities and helping thousands of commuters travel more efficiently every day.

Now, the rail line is taking another step forward by embracing digital payment technology. Across all 13 LRT-2 stations, passengers can now conveniently pay for their rides using Visa cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled devices. The new payment options reduce the need for cash transactions while giving riders a smoother and more seamless commuting experience.

Faster, Safer, and More Convenient Journeys

For many commuters, even small improvements in daily travel can make a meaningful difference. Eliminating the need to prepare cash or purchase separate fare media allows passengers to move through stations more efficiently while reducing friction during peak travel hours.

According to estimates from the Visa Economic Empowerment Institute, open-loop contactless payment systems in public transportation could increase ridership by as much as 10 percent. With more than 160,000 commuters relying on LRT-2, the new payment system has the potential to improve not only convenience but also the overall commuting experience.

Beyond speed, digital payments also provide an added layer of security and flexibility. Whether using a physical Visa card or an NFC-capable mobile device, commuters now have additional options that fit today's increasingly connected lifestyles.

Supporting Financial Inclusion

The LRT-2 rollout is about more than simply replacing cash with cards. It also contributes to Visa's broader goal of expanding access to digital financial services across the Philippines.

By allowing more people to participate in the digital economy through everyday transportation, the project helps remove barriers that may discourage the adoption of electronic payments. Public transportation serves millions of Filipinos each day, making it one of the most practical environments for introducing convenient and accessible financial technologies.

The initiative likewise supports government efforts to modernize public infrastructure while encouraging greater participation in digital financial ecosystems.

A Better Experience for Local and International Travelers

Modern travelers increasingly expect public transportation systems to support the same convenient payment methods they already use in shops, restaurants, hotels, and airports.

The introduction of contactless payments on LRT-2 helps align Metro Manila with many of Asia-Pacific's leading urban centers, where tapping a payment card or mobile device has become a standard part of commuting.

This can be particularly beneficial for international tourists, who may already carry Visa-enabled cards and can now use familiar payment methods while exploring the city without the need to exchange cash solely for train fares.

Across the Asia-Pacific region, Visa reports that 94 percent of riders expect contactless payment options to be available during their commute. In addition, 45 percent of commuters say they would take more trips if paying fares became easier, highlighting how payment convenience can directly influence mobility.

Building on Previous Successes

The LRT-2 implementation builds upon several successful cashless transit projects already introduced in the country. Visa previously worked on similar initiatives for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), as well as bus systems operating in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.

With the addition of LRT-2, Metro Manila's public transportation network continues moving closer to offering commuters a more consistent and interconnected digital payment experience across multiple transit systems.

The continued expansion also reflects growing collaboration among financial institutions, government agencies, and technology providers to modernize transportation infrastructure in ways that benefit commuters every day.

Continuing the Journey Toward Smarter Mobility

For Visa, the latest deployment is part of a much larger global effort to improve transportation through digital innovation. The company now supports more than 870 tap-to-ride transit projects worldwide, helping cities adopt payment technologies that make public transportation more accessible and efficient.

Jeffrey Navarro, Visa's Country Manager for the Philippines, emphasized the significance of the latest milestone.

“The automated fare collection systems across Metro Manila’s three rail lines signifies Visa’s commitment toward accelerating financial inclusion, allowing both commuters and tourists to access digital payments while improving overall urban mobility in the Philippines. With expanded access to digital financial systems, we aim to support the government in boosting productivity while stimulating economic activity to fuel growth.”

As contactless payments become increasingly integrated into daily life, projects like the LRT-2 rollout demonstrate how digital innovation can make routine activities more convenient while supporting financial inclusion, tourism, and smarter urban transportation for the Philippines.
