UnionBank Opens Doors to Learning and Inclusion Through Theater and The Arts

UnionBank brought beneficiaries from Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. and the QC Performing Arts Development Foundation, Inc. together for a special screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical, turning a theater outing into an opportunity for learning, inclusion, inspiration, and meaningful community connection.

There are experiences that stay with people long after the curtain comes down. For beneficiaries of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. (TWHI) and the QC Performing Arts Development Foundation, Inc. (QCPADFI), UnionBank recently helped create one of those moments through a special screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical at The Theatre at Solaire last July.

Made possible through UnionBank's long-standing partnership with GMG Productions, the outing offered much more than an opportunity to watch a world-class stage production. It gave beneficiaries a chance to step outside their usual environments, encounter the arts in a fresh setting, and discover new possibilities that could broaden their perspectives and inspire future aspirations.

Learning Through the Arts

For members of QCPADFI, a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the artistic talents of young performers, watching an international-caliber musical became a learning experience in itself.

Beyond enjoying the story unfolding on stage, the children and aspiring artists were able to observe the creative and technical elements involved in bringing a major musical production to life. These included acting, stage direction, lighting, and production design, giving them a firsthand look at disciplines they may eventually explore themselves.

Hanzel Estrella, Program Director of the Vocal Ensemble of QCPADFI, said, "I know that our organization, particularly the kids, can pick up lessons from this experience. They can deeply absorb the lessons, especially since they will have to go through life after this. This is a memorable experience for them."

While QCPADFI occasionally receives invitations to local productions, Estrella shared that this was the first opportunity for many members of the organization to experience a globally renowned musical presented in a world-class venue.

Inclusion Beyond the Workplace

The occasion also carried special significance for beneficiaries of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc., a long-time UnionBank partner in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The relationship between the two organizations goes beyond one-time activities. In 2018, UnionBank established a satellite Command Center at TWHI's facility in Cainta, Rizal, providing IT and basic programming training that eventually led to the hiring of PWD employees. These employees continue to work remotely under the Bank's supervision, alongside other project-based engagements.

Through the invitation to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Musical, that partnership extended beyond employment and training to include recreation, cultural exposure, and opportunities to participate in experiences outside the workplace.

Erika D. Villaflores, TWHI Public Relations and Fundraising Officer, shared, "This gave us a chance to see and experience a different environment since we're usually just in the compound. It's a great way to take a break and relax from the stresses of our work and personal lives."

Her words capture why inclusion can extend beyond providing access to jobs and services. It can also mean creating opportunities for people to enjoy spaces, experiences, and moments that enrich everyday life.

Going Beyond Communities

The theater experience forms part of UnionBank's flagship corporate social responsibility program, GoBeyond Communities (GBC), which is anchored on the Bank's purpose of reimagining banking to uplift lives.

Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on Education, Employment and Livelihood, Environment, and Inclusion, the program focuses on providing opportunities that can help individuals and communities learn, grow, and thrive.

Carl De Luzuriaga, UnionBank Organizational Development Head, explained, "One way to uplift the lives of our beneficiaries, particularly those from underserved communities, is to create meaningful opportunities and experiences. This is a good platform for them and a meaningful way for UnionBank to connect with the communities we serve."

That approach places human experiences alongside more traditional forms of community support. A theater performance may last only a few hours, but exposure to new ideas, creative possibilities, and environments can leave impressions that last considerably longer.

Opening Doors to New Possibilities

As UnionBank continues expanding its GoBeyond Communities initiatives, the Bank remains focused on opportunities that allow people to learn, thrive, and participate more fully in society.

Beyond banking, these efforts seek to create experiences that inspire confidence, broaden perspectives, and reinforce the idea that everyone deserves an opportunity to reach their full potential.

Through initiatives such as this exclusive theater experience, UnionBank is showing how corporate social responsibility can extend into spaces where learning, recreation, culture, and inclusion meet. For the beneficiaries who received their own "golden ticket" to the theater, the bigger takeaway may ultimately be the opportunity to see a wider world of possibilities waiting beyond the stage.
