Tech Basics: Maximum Memory ( RAM ) for Vista 32-Bit OS

32-Bit Vista Ultimate OS

Yesterday, Linda from New Jersey emailed us this question via techpinas@yahoo.com :

"Hi TechPinas, Happy Holidays! I'm thinking of upgrading my laptop's performance by swapping an additional stick of RAM ( Memory ). I'm running Windows Vista 32-Bit Operating System. Would you know the maximum amount of RAM my OS can operate on? Thanks!"

Here's our answer:

Hi Linda!

The theoretical maximum memory of a 32-Bit OS is 4GB. However, in practice, it is actually 4GB minus your Video Card memory and additional space for other system resources. The realistic memory, therefore, is 2.5 to 3.5 GB.

I suggest you set your Maximum Memory to 3GB. :)

Thanks for the inquiry, Linda!
