Sony Xperia M4 Aqua Philippines Price, Specs, Release Date, Features

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua looks almost exactly like the flagship-level Sony Xperia Z3 - heck, they even share some common features like being water-resistant and having battery stamina mode - but you can get the former for a whole lot less.

In terms of looks, as you can see in these photos courtesy of PhoneArena, the M4 Aqua flaunts the familiar Omnibalance design language by Sony, which incorporates the very premium and air-tight glass-metal-glass sandwich construction. The frame itself is made of anodized aluminum giving it an air of corporate elegance. The entire build is so attractive that the shiny power button - on its own - is enough as a design accent.

Update: Sony Xperia M4 Aqua features a painted polycarbonate frame.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua
Sony Xperia M4 Aqua - just like other high-end Xperia models - has a hardware camera button, which is an extreme rarity in Android smartphones these days. I personally see this as a testament to Sony's continuous drive to improve the imaging performance of their handsets.

Speaking of imaging, Sony Xperia M4 Aqua features a 13 MegaPixel autofocus camera at the back with HDR mode and Exmor RS sensor for improved performance whether you're using it outdoors under the sun or indoors with little ambient light available. The main cam is complemented by a 5 MegaPixel selfie shooter in front that has a 30mm wide angle lens that captures more of you, your friends, and the backdrop.

As for the technical specifications, apart from from the cameras, the M4 Aqua sports a 5-inch HD IPS display panel that's protected by scratch-resistant glass and it also comes with a Full HD 30fps video recorder that also benefits from the handset's top-notch lens. Under the hood, the device runs its Xperia-UI-skinned Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system with a 64-bit Octa Core Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 chipset, handles multitasking with 2 GB of RAM, and it offers a choice of 8 and 16GB of expandable storage to consumers.

Measuring only 7.3 millimeters at its thickest point, the M4 Aqua is powered by a a rather large, non-removable 2,400 mAh battery pack that - Sony says - delivers around 2 days of uptime. And you can even boost the battery life by turning on Stamina Mode that intuitively switches off applications when you're not using the phone's display.

As its very name suggests, Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is IP65 and IP68 Certified Dust and Water-Resistant, which means that it is protected against water ingress when submerged in up to 1 meter of liquid for around 30 minutes. This is particularly cool considering that the handset's 3.5 millimeter jack and microUSB port are exposed - that is, they don't have plastic or metal flaps covering them - which, again, reflects Sony's expertise and superiority in this department.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

Personally, I'm not a fan of using my smartphone to take underwater shots (I have my GoPro Hero 4 for that) so I would have loved this model no less even if it's not water-resistant. Nonetheless, I think having that certification is definitely a cool selling point that many other consumers - especially those who live extreme - would appreciate. I, for one, just see it as a reassuring protection against accidental spills.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

As most of you know, I have several Sony Xperia high-end smartphones in my collection - namely, the Sony Xperia Z1, Z2, Z3, Z Ultra, and Z1 Compact - and I love them all dearly. I think Sony makes gorgeous and durable smartphones that have top-notch imaging capabilities. Metal-clad Xperia devices are definitely headturners; You'd be proud to own one and to show it to your friends.

Sony Philippines has yet to announce the local availability and pricing details of the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua. However, my friend Kim Lato of Kimstore texted me yesterday and told me that the model should be up for purchase at her popular and trusted online store starting next week for only Php 12,900, which is a real treat.

Update as of August 19, 2015: Sony Xperia M4 Aqua is now officially available in the Philippines. You get it at all Sony Concept Stores and authorized retail outlets for Php 15,490.
