MSI Wind12 U230 Runs on AMD Neo X2 - Totally Not a Netbook - Specs, Photo

It may have been placed under MSI's netbook category - the Wind line - but MSI Wind 12 U1230, the newest iteration to the line, is hardly similar to its siblings -- at least when you consider its innards.

Weighing only 2.8 lbs, U1230 ships with:

1.6GHz AMD Athlon Neo X2 (vs. most netbooks' Intel Atom chip)
12.1" 16:9 LED Backlit Widescreen Display, 1,366 x 768 resolution
1.3-megapixel webcam
160GB hard drive
Windows 7 Home Premium OS
Ergonomic De-Stress keyboard -- with keys 51% larger than typical netbook keys

Keep tuning in for updates on price and release date. In the meantime, check out AMD Neo vs. Intel Atom benchmarks.

  1. quoting from Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_Neo#Athlon_Neo

"With 27 mm × 27 mm in size and 2.5 mm in thickness, the Athlon Neo processors utilize a new package called "ASB1", essentially a BGA package, for smaller footprint to allow smaller designs for notebooks and lowering the cost. The clock of the processors is significantly lower than desktop and other mobile counterparts to reach a low TDP, at 15W maximum for a single core x86 CPU. The Athlon Neo processors are equipped with 512 KB of L2 cache and HyperTransport 1.0 running at 800 MHz frequency"

Looks like its trying to reach Atom with its lowered TDP

  3. I just bought this netbook for 22800. For the pricetag, it's a good deal considering the specs.

The battery only lasts around 2-3 hours which is bad if you're on the go. (If PowerNow is enabled, it may reach a few minutes more than the 3-hour base line).

It didn't come with an OS, downloaded and installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 in it without any problem. Everything works. What surprised me most is that I don't have to install any manager for 3G modems..currently using SmartBro and plans on shifting to Sun..

Anyway..This laptop is a good deal. with the battery issue, I remove the batt and have use the power line when I'm at home..

Ohh.. one more issue.. it heats up easily.. am not yet sure if it's the weather or reall the system..
