Grab for Family Lets Filipino Teens Book Rides with Added Safety Features

Giving Teens More Independence, Parents More Visibility

For many Filipino parents, allowing teenagers to travel on their own can come with a familiar mix of convenience and concern. Grab Philippines is addressing both sides of that equation with Grab for Family, a feature that lets teenagers aged 13 to 17 book rides independently while giving their parents or guardians greater visibility into their journeys.

The feature builds on the growing adoption of Grab Family Accounts among Filipino households. According to Grab, Family Account sign-ups have more than doubled over the past year. Once family members are onboarded, they also take about 70% more rides in their first month, highlighting how shared access is becoming increasingly useful for everyday family mobility.

With Grab for Family, parents can receive trip updates in real time, follow their teen's ride on a live map, communicate with both the passenger and driver, and access additional safety tools during the journey.

Keeping Parents Connected During Every Ride

Real-time visibility sits at the center of Grab for Family. Through Live Ride Tracking, Trip Monitoring, and automated notifications, parents can keep tabs on a journey without constantly calling or messaging their teenagers.

Updates are provided at important stages of the trip. Parents can be notified when a driver has been assigned, when vehicle details become available, when their teen has been picked up, when the destination has been reached, and when the ride is completed. They can also follow the vehicle's progress through a live map.

The system is designed to provide additional visibility when something unexpected happens. Parents may receive alerts about unusual stops or route deviations, while Grab can send in-app prompts to the passenger to check whether they are safe.

These features give teenagers room to manage their own rides while allowing parents to remain informed from pickup through arrival.

Added Safeguards From Pickup to Drop-Off

Grab for Family also brings together several existing safety and communication tools intended to provide additional protection throughout a teen's journey.

Ride PIN adds a verification step before the trip starts. The passenger and driver must match a unique code shown in the app before proceeding, helping ensure that the teenager enters the correct vehicle.

Another useful feature for families is 3-Way Chat. Parents can join the in-app conversation between their teen and the driver, making it easier to clarify pickup locations, landmarks, or other important details without switching to another messaging platform.

AudioProtect provides another layer of security by enabling encrypted audio recording on both the passenger's and driver's devices during a ride. Grab says these recordings cannot be accessed by either party and are only reviewed by its safety team when a formal report has been submitted.

These tools work alongside Grab's Safety Center and Emergency Help functions, which provide access to localized assistance and emergency support when necessary.

Easy Setup Through the Grab App

Parents can activate Grab for Family directly through the existing Grab app. They can invite their teenager using a mobile number or send a unique invitation link.

After the teen accepts, the parent approves the request and identifies the account as belonging to a teenager. Doing so activates the relevant safety features for that account. Parents can also manage shared payment methods and adjust available safety settings according to their household's needs.

The setup means families do not need a separate service or app to manage teen rides. Instead, the feature integrates parental visibility and safety controls into the Grab experience families may already be using.

For families that depend on ride-hailing for school, activities, appointments, and other everyday trips, Grab for Family offers a way to balance a teenager's growing independence with a parent's desire to remain connected.
