The third generation iPad has just been officially announced in an Apple event in San Francisco, California. And contrary to what most of us expected, it didn't end up being named iPad3 or iPadHD.

Called simply 'The New iPad', the latest iteration to Apple's popular slate line looks almost identical to its predecessor, the iPad2. Nevertheless, it does come with several enhancements that will surely entice new customers to get it and previous generation iPad owners to upgrade.

The New iPad flaunts a stunning new Retina display - similar to what's found on iPhone 4S, and features Apple's new custom-designed A5X chip with quad-core graphics, and a 5 megapixel iSight camera with advanced optics for capturing amazing photos and 1080p Full HD videos even in low light settings. As for connectvity, the three iPad Wi-Fi + 4G variants connect to the fastest networks worldwide and still deliver 10 hours of battery life while remaining thin and light.

On the software side, the new iPad runs iOS 5.1, the latest update to Apple's mobile operating system, which comes with new features including a redesigned camera app with video stabilization, personal hotspot (for sharing ultra-fast 4G connection with other devices), support for dictation in English, German, French, and Japanese, and the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream. iOS 5.1 also works seamlessly with iCloud, letting users automatically and wirelessly store content and push it to various iDevices including iPhone, iPod Touch, Mac, Macbook Air and Macbook Pro.

In the US, the new iPad models will start shipping on March 16, 2012. The suggested retail price for the 16GB Wifi-Only model is $499, the 32GB model costs $599 and while 64GB sells for $699. iPad Wi-Fi + 4G variants are available via AT&T or Verizon with a suggested retail price of $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB model and $829 for the 64GB model.

Note that the US price schedule for the new iPad is the same as that of iPad2 last year. That said, I'm inclined to believe that 2012 iPad prices in the Philippines will likewise be similar to its predecessor's; If you remember, in 2011, Apple iPad2 Wifi-Only 16GB, 32GB and 64GB sold for Php 23,990, Php 28,990 and Php 33,990 respectively. Apple iPad2 Wifi + 3G 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, on the other hand, sold for Php 30,990, Php 35,990 and Php 40,990 respectively. The TP Guesstimate for the new iPad's release date in the Philippines is either on the last week of April or the first week of May 2012. Oh, and we also believe that Smart Communications will be an official carrier of the new iPad and will offer it as a bundled device with its future LTE plans. Let's see.
