Xiaomi Redmi S2 Philippines Price PHP 7,990, Full Specs, Key Features

On June 4, 2018, disruptive Chinese tech company Xiaomi quietly launched a new lower midrange Android smartphone here in the Philippines, which targets budget-conscious consumers who want to get the most bang for their buck whenever they purchase a new gadget.

Priced at only PHP 7,990, the 3GB RAM version of the Xiaomi Redmi S2 looks a lot like the more powerful Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 -- but in lieu of a metal shell, its enclosure is crafted from polycarbonate or plastic.

Despite this, Xiaomi Redmi S2 still looks quite attractive -- thanks to its slim form factor and the metallic sheen of its case.

Apart from its design, I think there are five things about this model that make it worth checking out. Let's go through them one by one.

First, it has a large 5.99-inch HD+ display, which surely makes updating social media apps, reading blogs, watching videos, and playing 3D games more fun and enjoyable.

Second, the front cam not only has a high 16 MegaPixel resolution but also comes with Soft LED Flash, allowing you to snap clear selfies even in low light conditions. This snapper also benefits from Xiaomi's own Beautification software that delivers more natural looking self-portraits even after application of skin clearing effect.

Third, Redmi S2 sports a 12MP + 5MP Dual Rear Camera module, which enables adjustable depth of field effect or virtual Bokeh, wherein the background of the subject is beautifully blurred.

In 2017, handset manufacturers gave this imaging feature was almost exclusively to their flagship and upper midrange smartphones. Hence, it's a real treat to have it now on a device that's as affordable as the Redmi S2.

Side Note: According to one of my friends who own a Xiaomi Redmi S2, the best thing about this smartphone is its Gyro-assisted Electronic Image Stabilization that can be turned one when recording FullHD or 1080p videos. "I've recorded some really steady clips using this handset that looked as if I mounted it on a gimbal. The EIS of this model is that good," he told me.

Fourth, Xiaomi Redmi S2 has more than decent internal hardware. The device runs its MIUI skinned Android 8.1 Oreo operating system with a powerful and energy-efficient 14nm Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 Processor, which is complemented by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM. The internal storage is easily expandable using the dedicated microSD card slot, which means that you won't have to sacrifice the device's Dual SIM capability just to get more space for your files.

Fifth and finally, this handset comes with good privacy and security features. At the back, it has a Fingerprint Scanner and in front, there's a Face Scanner integrated into the selfie camera.
