What Will Happen to Symbian?

If you're one of the millions of Nokia fans who've grown to love Symbian over the years and are now worried about the future of the platform following Nokia's alliance with Microsoft, worry no more.

Nokia will give you enough time to slowly let go.

Symbian won't fade out-- at least within the next two years. Not after all the investment Nokia made on the Ovi ecosystem and on developing the Symbian operating system itself.

Quoting Nokia;

"With Nokia's planned move to Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Symbian becomes a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. This strategy recognizes the opportunity to retain and transition the installed base of 200 million Symbian owners. Nokia expects to sell approximately 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come"

So I guess the company will still stick to Symbian for its upcoming midrange releases and S40 for entry level phones.

Note however that, in the long run or if its Windows Phone venture flies off as expected, Nokia intends to drop research and development investments on Symbian and altogether stop the production of Symbian handsets;

  1. The quiestion is what kind of phones will nokia make since windows phone 7 is designed for high end devices. Nokia is known for it's cheap yet high built devices and now that they'll use WP7 then will it change? How about the OVI App store in which they've invested so much into it
