Nokia X Android Philippines Price Php 5,990, Specs, Release Date, Sample Camera Shots, Features, Demo Video

Earlier this evening, I graced Nokia's invitation for the launch of their first Android-based smartphone, the Nokia X, in the Philippines -- which officially makes our country one of the first in the world to receive the much-awaited handset.

The event was held at the Holiday Inn in Makati City - a last minute change from the earlier F1 Hotel outdoor venue in Taguig City due to inclement weather. (I really have to hand it to the company's PR agency - Cohn and Wolfe - for effectively pulling off such quick changes for the benefit of tech bloggers and the media.)

Too bad I arrived really late at the venue as I had an appointment with my doctor prior to the event then I was stuck in rush hour traffic on the way to Makati. I missed the presentations and I didn't get a free Nokia X unit. But it's alright. I love and support Nokia - the company has been a partner of TechPinas since Day 1 - and that's the main reason why I always do my best to attend their events in and out of the country.

TP Friends, as I've shared in earlier posts, Nokia X features the Finnish Giant's renowned quality and design, with a fresh tile-based user interface inspired by the company's Windows Phone Lumia line. It comes with Fastlane, a screen that lets people switch between their favorite apps more smoothly and quickly browse through their activities. X-Series users can access curated, quality-tested apps from Nokia Store, more than a dozen third-party app stores and by sideloading. All devices are also pre-loaded with a variety of very popular third-party apps and games!

Out of the box, users can enjoy signature Nokia experiences including free HERE Maps with true offline maps and integrated turn-by-turn navigation, and Nokia MixRadio for free music streaming and downloadable playlists. The Nokia X is also an affordable introduction to popular Microsoft services, including free cloud storage using OneDrive.

The phone's design language is reminiscent of the company's popular Asha line. Holding the device, you will definitely feel that air of durability, sturdiness, and toughness that all Nokia handsets are known to possess.

"We believe this unique combination will resonate with consumers around the world and set a great precedent for the level of quality that can be achieved in the fast-growing, affordable smartphone segment," shared Mr. Gary Chan, Nokia's Head of Marketing for Pan Asia.

"We are happy to be one of the first countries to launch the much anticipated Nokia X," said Mr. Karel Holub, General Manager of Nokia Philippines. "The Nokia X would be a great device for Filipinos with Fastlane, signature Nokia experiences, and a number of third party apps in addition to the sturdy and attractive build at an affordable price."

Flaunting a 4-inch WVGA IPS display, the handset runs the Android-based Nokia X Software Platform with its 1 GHz Dual Core Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, handles multitasking with 512 MB of RAM, and has 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD card slot supporting up to 32 GB. Users will also get a 3 MegaPixel fixed focus camera and a 1,500 mAh battery pack delivering 13.3 Hours of Talk Time or up to 28.5 Days of Standby Time.

Here are a couple of indoor, low-light shots TP Friend Oreo Pontejos took during the event using Nokia X's 3 MegaPixel main camera:

The Nokia X features two screens: Home, which features a fresh, tile-based design and Fastlane. Fastlane is a dynamic record of how people use their smartphone, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. It captures everything people love. They need only swipe once from the homescreen to access Fastlane, see a record of recent activity, and switch between their favorite apps smoothly. Fastlane, which we first saw on Nokia Asha touchscreen phones, has been completely re-imagined for the Nokia X family. People can return a missed call by calling or texting, accept or decline calendar invitations, or control the music player - all from within the Fastlane view. Fastlane is also more customizable and social-friendly than ever. People can select what appears on their Fastlane feed, read notifications from their social networks, and update their status from within Fastlane, making the experience even more intuitive and productive.

Nokia X Android-based smartphone is now officially available at all Nokia Store and authorized retail partners across the archipelago. The handset has an official suggested retail price of only Php 5,990 and you can get it in a number of vivid colors, namely, White, Black, Bright Green, and Bright Red. Of course, since the phone's back shell is swappable, you can always change the device's hue to match your mood or the color of your attire.

To know more about this exciting release, kindly watch this exclusive hands-on and full demo interview with Mr. Mike Smith - Nokia Philippines' Product Manager - that I recorded during the launch of Nokia X in the country.

Side Note: To those who are asking, there's no official word yet on the availability of Nokia X+ and Nokia XL in the Philippines. However, the TP Guesstimate for the release date of Nokia XL locally is early Q2 2014 and I think it's going to cost more or less Php 6,680 based on its SRP in other territories. Stay tuned for updates.
