What is Microsoft Bing ?

Microsoft once again made it clear that it's not going to take all the beating from its competition sitting down - especially not from Google! Presenting BING, formerly Kumo, Microsoft's latest attempt at online Search Engine:

But what's so special about Bing, really?

Quoting CNET:

When one hovers over a particular result, they get a pop-up window with more information, such as the query terms in context on the page.

In other cases, Microsoft is bringing more information into the results themselves. Type in "Amazon" and one will get not only links to that Web site, but also the company's hard-to-find customer service phone number. A search for UPS will let one track a package directly from Bing.

While potentially useful for customers, it could also be a sticking point among those whose content it is borrowing from so liberally. Product searches, for example, aggregate both user and professional reviews from various sites directly within the Bing result.

And how serious is Microsoft about making Bing fly off?

[Microsoft Corporation] is set to launch an $80 million to $100 million campaign for Bing, the search engine it hopes will help it grab a bigger slice of the online ad market. That's a big campaign -- big compared with consumer-product launches ($50 million is considered a sizable budget for a national rollout) and very big when you consider that Google spent about $25 million on all its advertising last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence, with about $11.6 million of that focused on recruiting. Microsoft, by comparison, spent $361 million. Certainly Google has never faced an ad assault of anything like this magnitude.

I personally think the concept behind Bing is cool -- here's to hoping that it could give Google Search a run for its money.

Microsoft Bing will be launched for public consumption on June 3, 2009.

  1. One of the great feature of bing is auto compete feature, which is similar to Google, though being a blogger I would like to see some quality result from
Bing rather then people who game SEo and come at the the top of Google Search result. Lets hope for something new and useful this time from Microsoft
