Smart Offers Free Internet for All via Internet.Org Website and App for Android Smartphones and Tablets

Internet.org is an initiative spearheaded by Facebook that aims to make the benefits of mobile internet services accessible to two-thirds of the world's population who are not yet connected or online.

This project comes in the form of a website and Android application that subscribers can access for free using their smartphones or feature phones. On either platforms, users can browse Facebook among many other useful sites all for free -- that is, without having to pay for the mobile data that they consume or the time they spend online.

"We are working with operators, content partners, and governments from all over the world to address the barriers that prevent people from connecting and joining the knowledge economy," said Mr. Markku Makelainen, Facebook's Director of Global Operator Partnerships. "We are excited to bring Internet.org app to the Philippines and give people access to internet services and tools that can help create new ideas and opportunities."

In a landmark or trailblazing move, last March 18, 2015, Smart Communications became the first telecommunications company to launch the Internet.org app and website in the Philippines as well as the whole of Southeast Asia. Facebook has partnered with Airtel in Africa, Reliance in India, and Tigo for Colombia and Tanzania.

“Smart’s partnership with Facebook is a big boost to our ‘Internet for All’ campaign, an advocacy we have been strongly pushing for. By launching Internet.org app with Facebook in the Philippines, we are making useful information within reach of millions of Filipinos,” shared Mr. Napoleon L. Nazareno, President and Chief Executive Officer of Smart Communications.
