Samsung Galaxy J8 Philippines Price and Release Date, Eight Key Features

Historically, Samsung has released similar smartphone models in India and in the Philippines. Simply put, whatever India gets from the tech company, we - sooner or later - also get.

As such, I think it won't be long before the Korean Giant likewise announces the all-new Samsung Galaxy J8 in our market.

Update as of July 18, 2018: Samsung Galaxy J8 has just been formally launched in the Philippines via an exclusive media event held at Little Flour Cafe located at Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The official suggested retail price of this handset is just PHP 15,990, making it a very competitive model in the 2018 midrange Android smartphone category. This handset is now available at all Samsung Concept Stores and authorized retailers nationwide.

From the looks of it, this model is the natural follow-up to the best-selling Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro from 2017 -- and pretty much like its predecessor, the Galaxy J8 - I believe - is made to go head to head with popular midrange handset models by Chinese manufacturers.

Looking at its specs sheet, I'd say this release has the chops to do just that.

To specific, for me, the Samsung Galaxy J8 has eight stand-out features.

1. It has a tall 6-inch HD+ 720 x 1480 18.5:9 SuperAMOLED display that's large and brilliant enough to deliver a compelling photo and video viewing experience.

2. The phone features a 16 MegaPixel f/1.9 front-facing camera with Soft LED flash that lets you snap crisp selfies even in low light conditions. This cam is also powered by the Korean company's own Beautification imaging software.

3. The model has a sleek, thin, and light shell crafted from polycarbonate, making it a joy to keep both in the purse and in the pocket. The handset is available in three classy colors, namely, Blue, Black, and Gold.

4. Samsung Galaxy J8 sports a Dual Rear Camera module - consisting of a 16 MegaPixel f/1.7 shooter plus a secondary 5 MegaPixel f/1.9 snapper - that enables LiveFocus effect where the background of the subject is beautifully blurred.

5. The handset runs its Samsung-UI-skinned Android 8.0 Oreo operating system with an Octa Core 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex A53 and Adreno 506 based Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor, which is complemented by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. This is a good set of internal hardware for a 2018 mid-level Android smartphone.

6. The microSD card slot is dedicated. This means that you won't have to sacrifice Dual SIM capability just to get more storage space for the device.

7. Galaxy J8 runs on a non-removable 3,500 mAh Li-Ion pack, which should work well with the energy-efficient 14nm chipset to deliver a fairly long uptime. While I wish the battery was bigger, I think its size is good enough for a whole day of regular use.

8. In India, this model dons an official suggested retail price of 18,990 INR or roughly PHP 14,500 with current conversion, which is not bad at all given the key selling points of the handset.

As of writing, Samsung Mobile Philippines has yet to give official word on the local availability of the Galaxy J8. Nonetheless, I'm guessing that this handset would go for around PHP 15,000 to PHP 15,500 if and when it arrives here within June 2018.

Stay tuned for updates about this exciting new smartphone model, TP Friends.
