Fewer People Lined up for iPhone 3GS ?

It's just been written in World Tech History: Apple iPhone 3GS - the third serving of Apple's smartphone, was finally released for public consumption yesterday. But the interesting thing is that, despite the great new features of the phone that have earlier been disclosed, fewer people lined up for for it - with only around 100 to 200 people in some release venues.

This year's iPhone 3GS release line.

This is in stark contrast to the release of iPhone 3G last year with frenzied crowds stretching from blocks on end.

Last year's iPhone 3G line.

What could have caused this display of apparent lack of interest in iPhone 3GS? The global financial crisis? The stellar sales of Palm Pre? New Apple and AT&T pre-order and reservation purchase options for iPhone 3GS? Or, as some people put it, that iPhone 3GS is not too different from 3G?

Whatever the case, we are missing the long lines.

  1. I beg to disagree. Iphone 3G S reached the 1M mark on its third day and by no means the release last year would even be close to that. The reason why there are less people lining up this year is because of more release centers with better activation process etc that made it easier and quicker for customers to purchase and activate their phones. Fewer people on queue doesnt necessarily mean poor sales, it may actually mean better process. ;)

and about the palm pre thing, check out the sales statistics, I think palm pre got bombed up not only by apple but by lots of other smartphones as well.

Yes, that could very well be the main reason for the shorter lines.
