Like how HTC Wildfire S is to its predecessor, HTC Desire S brings quite few improvements on technical specifications to 2010's HTC Desire. Like the handset it's supposed to supersede, HTC Desire S features a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, a 5 MegaPixel camera with autofocus and flash, 720p HD video capture capability, microUSB port, microSD card slot, and 3G, Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity support.

The most noticeable upgrades that Desire S offers can be seen on the phone's design and software. Altogether ditching the optical trackpad, HTC Desire S features perhaps a more conservative and streamlined design identity. On the software side, the phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS skinned by HTC Sense UI as opposed to its predecessor's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system with an earlier version of HTC Sense.
