Sony PlayStation 4 Makes Sony The Top Game Console Seller Again After 8 Years! 7 Million Units Sold Thus Far!

Congratulations, Sony!

After 8 straight years of being second only to Nintendo in the list of top selling game console makers, legendary Japanese multimedia company Sony is back at #1 in terms of total number of units sold -- thanks to the PlayStation 4!

Sony PlayStation 4

According to Nikkei Business Daily, as of today, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has sold 7 million PlayStation 4 (PS4) systems helping boost the total figure to 18.7 million game console units which include sales of other models like the PS Vita 2000 and PS Vita TV. In comparison, Nintendo has sold a total of 16.31 million units - including that of previous best-sellers Nintendo Wii and 3DS -  just enough to put the brand at the #2 position.

The last time Sony was at the top spot was back in 2006 -- but the lackluster market performance of Sony PlayStation 3 as well as the dwindling sales of PlayStation Portable variants allowed Nintendo to snatch the lead.

Sony PlayStation 4 in the Philippines

Sony PS4 was launched in the Philippines last January 14, 2014 at the Glorietta Vibe Activity Center in Makati City. I graced Sony Philippines' invitation for the landmark event and even recorded this video so I could share the experience with you:

"Sony has always been in touch with what the gaming community needs and wants. We have always strived to give consumers the best experience in home entertainment, which includes the thrilling roster of PlayStation. It is with great pride that we bring the newest PlayStation 4 in the market today," shared Sony Philippines' President and Managing Director, Mr. Yasushi Asaoka, during the launch.

PS4 is a next generation in Sony's computer entertainment system redefining rich and immersive game play with powerful graphics, speed, deeply integrated social sharing capability, and innovative second-screen view on devices such as PlayStation Vita. By making the best games from top game developers available on the new generation PlayStation platform, combined with the device's powerful hardware, Sony is going to redefine every user's gaming experience.

The Sony PlayStation 4 currently retails at Php 24,999 for just the standard console package and at Php 26,999 with the camera. Sony is also now generously offering customers additional one year warranty coverage in countries where the PS4 has been officially released.
