What is Search Engine Optimization? - First Serving

Time for another Tech Basics post. This time, let's talk about Search Engine Optimization or simply SEO?

What is Search Engine Optimization?

SEO is the procedure or process of improving the quality of traffic entering a website coming from search engines such as Google and Yahoo via 'organic' search results.

In simple words, SEO is all about doing several actions to make sure that a website or blog will rank higher in search engine results because the higher your rank, the more traffic you can get out of search engines.

Kinds of SEO actions:

There are basically 2 categories of SEO tasks that you can perform to benefit your website.
First is On-Site SEO and second is Off-Site SEO. Since this is but a BASICS post, I will refrain from explaining both in great technical detail.

Onsite SEO is basically everything that you can do WITHIN your own website to increase its search results rank. This includes (but are not limited to) the following:
1. Making sure that your website pages' title, url and body contain words and phrases relevant to the search engine.
2. Creating in-site links. Link your pages together.

Offsite SEO is basically everything that you do OUTSIDE your own website to increade its search rank. This includes (but are not limited to) the following:
1. Bookmarking your pages in popular news aggregator sites.
2. Creating as many relevant incoming links to your website from popular forums and other sites.

While you are at it, keep in mind that nothing beats creating good, quality content to rank higher in search engines. At the end of the day, there's only so much good SEO techniques can do to help a website.
