Nokia Lectures Apple on How to Properly Design a Phone Antenna

Sure. The statement wasn't directly addressed to the Cupertino company but why else would the Finnish giant release it at this time?

Quoting Nokia [via Engadget]:

"Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature.

Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.

In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That's why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design."

Actually, Nokia didn't even need to issue such statement. Pretty much EVERYONE knows that Nokia phones are the BEST when it comes to signal reception. Anybody who disagrees with that has half of the world's cellphone toting population to convince otherwise.

  2. it maybe that Nokia needs to lecture Apple how to design a phone, but hey, there's a lot of stuff that Nokia has done similar to iPhone. The multitouch first of all. The OVI store based on iTunes. iPhone's capacitive touch which is now on some Nokia X series phones and pretty much soon on N8. guess its an exchange of lectures after all in fairness.

  3. I had a Nokia phone and I can attest that the iPhone 4 I have now is giving me much better reception in areas the Nokia phone did not. So my experience with the iPhone is much better that the Nokia phone and I am glad I switched. Sorry Nokia, nice try.
